A Comprehensive Study of Al0.6Ti0.4N Coatings Deposited by Cathodic Arc and HiPIMS PVD Methods in Relation to Their Cutting Performance during the Machining of an Inconel 718 Alloy

The structural, physical–chemical, and micromechanical characteristics of Al0.6Ti0.4N coatings deposited by different physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods, such as cathodic arc (CAD), well advanced HiPIMS techniques were investigated in terms their cutting performance during the machining an Inconel 718 alloy. XRD studies had revealed that coating featured lower residual stresses more fine-grained structure. Electrochemical characterization with potentiostat-impendence method shows has a significantly porosity than CAD. SEM AFM surface morphology demonstrate smoother absence droplet phases, contrast XRD, combined FIB/TEM studies, difference crystal structure both coatings. each coating, hardness, elastic modulus, fracture toughness, adhesion to substrate, evaluated. was found possess beneficial combination properties compared alleviated damage coated layer under operation. Combined grain size refinement, this results improved adaptive through formation greater amount thermal barrier sapphire tribo-films on friction surface. All these contribute reduction flank crater wear intensity, notching, leading improvement coating’s tool life.
